One pathway, three stages

Kids start in Learn to Swim and progress at their own pace: same school, same approach, all the way to squad. (A squad is a coached training group that swims sessions together.)

The difference

We teach correct technique from day one.

  • Correct body position
  • Correct head position
  • Correct engagement with the water

We don't want your kids flapping around the pool with their head and body position all over the place, as we see so often. We want them to swim efficiently, become safe, and have fun.

Why choose us

Five reasons parents pick SWS

4 kids per class, max

Never more than four kids to a class, guaranteed. Any more than that and it stops being coaching.

33°C12.5m pool 28°C25m pool

Warm, heated water

Kids stay in the water longer when it's warm, so more of the lesson gets spent learning.

Expert Swim Coaches

Every coach is a current or former squad swimmer who knows real technique.

Meet the team

No level system

Kids stay with one instructor who extends their strengths while fixing weak spots, with no badge chart to get stuck on.

Why we don't do levels

Fun, fast progress

Engaged kids learn faster. Have fun, learn fast, swim fast: that's the whole idea.

Process over pressure

Our instructors

Check out our highly skilled staff, and who will be teaching your kids

All of our instructors are current or former squad swimmers. This is them in the water at a recent staff training session, doing the same technique they'll be teaching your kids.

Common questions

Things parents ask us

Why don't you have a level system?

Because strict levels stifle progress. Kids often get stuck in a level over one small skill deficiency, which blocks progress on everything else, and that breeds frustration, boredom and disengagement.

Instead, your child stays with one instructor who works with similar-ability kids, extends them on their strengths and helps with what they struggle with. Constant progression, no waiting rooms. Read the full explanation.

Why only four kids per class?

A 30-minute class isn't long, so we have to get the most out of it. Four is the most we think one instructor can properly coach. Any more than that is essentially crowd control. And we don't just say we have small classes: we guarantee it.

Will my child be pushed too hard?

Our classes are challenging but not overwhelming. We're not looking to train Olympians. Our programs were developed by our Head Coach with a child and adolescent behaviour specialist, and they run on a process of improvement, not shouting, pressure, or a myopic focus on results. In our experience that leads to more enjoyment, less burnout and, ironically, better results. More on process over pressure.

What age should my child start?

Most of our swimmers start at age 4 or 5, and most of those are swimming 1–2km with efficient technique by age 8 or 9. Teaching correct technique is much easier when children first start swimming than fixing bad habits later, so starting younger helps. Starting older is also completely fine: kids have great neuroplasticity, and we pick technique up quickly with them whatever age they walk in at.

Which program is right for my child?

New and developing swimmers start in Learn to Swim; Pre-Squad builds fitness and endurance on top of technique; Squad is for swimmers training for fitness and for those who want to race. If you're not sure, pick "Not sure yet" when you book a free lesson and we'll suggest a class when we call.

What does "competitive" actually mean?

Plenty of squad swimmers never race, and that's a perfectly good reason to be there. For the kids who do want more, competitive means timed events: club nights, school carnivals, state fixtures, and further down the track open water swims like the Rottnest Channel. We build the squad around that side of it, then flex it for the swimmers who want the training and the fitness without the racing.

For those who want to race, we coach the squads at Celts Swimming Club, a club sanctioned by Swimming WA. That gives kids a club to race under at state level, with strength and conditioning, sit-down performance check-ins, and written notes after every meet behind it.

A dedicated Celts page is on the way. In the meantime, if your child is curious about racing, have a chat with us and we'll talk you through it.
