Three steps, from walking in to knowing your child is in the right class.
When you arrive look for an on-deck supervisor (in blue/white SWS polo shirts), there are normally 2-3 on pool deck.
We will be expecting you, and will take you over to where your children will be having their first free lesson.
During the lesson one of our expert supervisors will come and observe the children, to see how they are going and what their current level of swimming is.
We will have a chat with you about our observations and what our recommendations are.
Please ask any questions you may have, we are always happy to help.
During your initial enquiry to SWS we would have asked you about your children's ability, and we have placed them in a trial class that we think is likely to be at the correct level.
However, this is just a starting point and we will check our observations of the children, and their lesson, to ensure that our recommendation on the class is correct.
If the class is correct then we will offer you that class if it is suitable for you. If the day/time does not work for you, we will find a suitable class at a suitable level at a day/time that works for you (subject to availability).
Our classes are taught by expert swimmers (all of whom have a squad background) who will only teach correct technique.
Being in the correct class is really important, if it is too hard then this compromises their skill acquisition as they focus on keeping up, as opposed to focusing on technique. If it is too easy then they will get bored and disengaged. Thus, the lessons are designed to be challenging but not overwhelming.
However, children's ability does improve all the time, or perhaps they didn't demonstrate their true ability during their trial lesson. This is OK!
We have a constant assessment approach, and our instructors are trained to communicate with the supervisors if they think a child will benefit from a more challenging class. In addition, if you think we have missed something please talk to a supervisor, while your child is in the class, and we will have another look. We will then either explain why the class is the most suitable OR change the class.
We have no interest in keeping children in a class that is not at the correct level, we want the children to progress as quickly as possible, this helps them maintain engagement, enjoy their lessons and become as safe as possible as quickly as possible.
Any questions, at any time at the pool, please talk to a supervisor, we are here to help.
What to pack differs a little by program. Pick your child's level.
We do have spare equipment to borrow.
At this level swimmers may prefer their own stuff.
The best way to see how we teach is to come and watch a class in person. In the meantime, here are our instructors in the water at a recent staff training session. Every one of them is a current or former squad swimmer.
